Middlesex Retain the County Title.....(again)!! (Added 6 April 2024) - Expired (31 May 2024)
Middlesex County first team have retained the Premiership title following the final weekend of matches on 23/24 March 2024.
Going into the final weekend, the first team were in fourth place - two points behind Hampshire, three points behind Surrey and five points behind Buckinghamshire, the only other county to win the title in the last six seasons.
However, a remarkable run of results from 4-4 against Leicestershire in the Saturday AM match saw the county run out 7-4 winners against Leicestershire and 11-0 winners against both Yorkshire and Buckinghamshire.
This catapulted us to the top of the table with a nine-point margin of victory over runners-up Hampshire.
Kent and Lancashire were promoted and will join the first team in the Premiership next season. Sadly, Leicestershire and Yorkshire were relegated from the Premiership to the Championship.
This is Middlesex's fourth Premiership win in the last five completed seasons (Middlesex was on course to win the 2019/20 season but Covid unfortunately cancelled it, meaning in reality we won five of the last six). Given that Middlesex had not previously won the Premier division since the 1952/53 season and had only won seven times in our history before the first of our most recent wins in 2017/18, it's a remarkable run of success.

The team on the final weekend was Dinuka Karunaratne, Rohan Thool, Angus Pedersen, Sachin Dias, Jacob Reynolds, Freya Patel-Redfearn, Thilini Hendahewa, Vanessa Chien and Zoe Hallam . The first team was also represented this season in the first two weekends by Robert Golding, Victor Liew, Danny Leinster, Sonish Hathi, Evelyn Yu, Anna George and Libby McMorrow.
Well done to all the players and to team manager Mark McCanney.

The second team managed to hang on to their place in Division 1 South by the smallest of margins thanks to a fighting final weekend. The third team almost managed the impossible as they had a significant margin to make up to avoid relegation in Division 2 South East, and very nearly did it, losing out on countback only. They are relegated to Division 3 next season to join the fourth team who retained their position in Division 3 South East.
Many thanks to all players, supporters and managers for the past season. Onto the next!

Senior County Championships 2023/24 (Nov update) (Added 17 November 2023) - Expired (17 December 2023)
Middlesex 1sts had a decent start to the defence of its Premiership county title on 11/12 November but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams all had difficult starts to their campaign.

The first team were missing England no 1 Freya Patel-Redfearn but still had a very strong team who battled on the Saturday to a 6-5 win over Hertfordshire 1sts and an excellent 8-3 win over Avon 1sts who had beaten Surrey 1sts 6-5 earlier in the day. On the Sunday we faced a very strong Surrey 1sts team and recovered well from 1-5 down to lose 5-6. This leaves us in 2nd place overall, six points behind the phenomenally strong Buckinghamshire 1sts team who look determined to regain the title we took from them last season.

The second team were also missing many nominated players and a last minute change to the match schedule did not help. They lost 5-6 to Hampshire 2nds and 4-7 to Surrey 2nds to sit sixth out of 8 in Division 1 South and will need to bounce back if we are to make any impact this season.

The third team had an incredibly difficult weekend losing 1-10 to both Hertfordshire 3rds and Essex 2nds. Once again, lots of players pulling out last minute did not help. The team are bottom of Division 2 South East and will need a big effort in the last two weekends to avoid another relegation.

The fourth team had a more mixed weekend in Division 3 South East, losing 2-9 to Hampshire 3rds but then beating Wiltshire 3rd 10-1. They sit 4th of 8.

Thanks to all players, managers and supporters.

Next weekend fixture is 20/21 January 2024.

Senior County Championships 2022/23 (Added 3 April 2023) - Expired (22 September 2023)

Senior County Championships 2022.23

Congratulations to Middlesex 1st team, who have regained the Premiership title and are now County Champions after last winning in the 2018.19 season (Middlesex was 12 points in the lead in the 2019.20 and looked certain to win a third title in a row before Covid cancelled the season).

Going into the final weekend, Middlesex held a narrow one point lead over the reigning champions Buckinghamshire and a five point lead over an unbeaten Hampshire team. A 9-2 victory over Hertfordshire 1sts and a 7-4 win over Cheshire 1sts on the Saturday meant that Middlesex only needed 4 points from their final match against Hampshire on the Sunday to guarantee the title. In the end, an emphatic 9-2 win over Hampshire left Middlesex a comfortable 9 points clear of Buckinghamshire in 2nd place and 15 points clear of Hampshire in third. Well done to all 14 players who represented the first team over the three weekends. Dinuka Karunaratne, Robert Golding, Angus Pedersen, Vanessa Chien, Freya Patel Redfearn, Niluka Karunaratne, Evelyn Yu, Thilini Hendahewa, Theresa Huang, Victor Liew, Zoe Hallam, Sachin Dias, Anna Kalathil George and Boglarka Ujvari and to team manager Mark McCanney and all others who have supported the county.

The second team finished a very credible third in Division 1 South and only narrowly missed out qualifying for the Division 1 play offs. The third team finished 7th of 8 in the same division and are relegated to Division 2 for next season, where they will be looking to bounce back strongly. The fourth and fifth team finished 5th and 6th in Division 3 South East.

The Executive Committee are looking at the number of teams Middlesex enters in the Senior County Championships and there is a proposal to reduce the number of teams, but we will update everyone once a decision has been made.

Thank you to other team managers and the selection committee: Cynthia Law, Ylenia Ficalora, Aayush Christie, Lochani Hartley, Gemma Jarrett, Robert Golding and Sandra Peaston.

Final Senior County Championships weekend (Added 25 March 2022) - Expired (2 April 2022)

Final Senior County Championships weekend this coming weekend for Middlesex's five county teams.

First Team
The 1sts, currently sit top of the Premiership but may struggle to stay there as they have an incredibly tough weekend against a Surrey 1st team filled with current and ex-internationals, a young Avon 1sts squad with incredible talent and a Hertfordshire 1sts team with many of GB's past Olympians and Olympic medallists.
Whatever happens this weekend, the 1sts have had a fun and successful return to SCC action.

Second Team
The 2nds face a real battle to avoid relegation from the Championship and face Glasgow 1sts, Nottinghamshire 1sts and Derbyshire 1sts at the University of Warwickshire.
They currently sit 9th of 10 and need to avoid a bottom two position to remain in that division.

Third & Fourth Team
The 3rds and 4ths are playing in Harlow this weekend. The 3rds are currently top of Division 2 South East and in the running for promotion to Division 1. They take on Kent 2nds, Essex 2nds and Norfolk 1sts.
The 4ths are in a relegation battle and take on Norfolk 1sts, Hertfordshire 3rds and Kent 2nds.

Fifth Team
The 5ths only have one match this weekend against Cambridgeshire 3rds and look set for a very solid mid-table position.

Good luck to all the players, managers and supporters and also to all of Middlesex's opposition.

Senior County Championships (Added 26 January 2022) - Expired (12 February 2022)

Senior County Championships Makes a Return

The first SCC weekend took place on 15/16 January 2022 and Middlesex fielded 48 players across five teams on the same day in Milton Keynes, Hatfield, Basildon and Redbridge.
Thanks to all the managers (Mark McCanney, Sandra Peaston, Ylenia Ficalora, Srushti Panchal, Ann Fan) and the selection committee (John Herdman, Elena Johnson, Sandra Peaston, Mark McCanney, Gemma Jarrett, Robert Golding) for getting this all in order and ensuring we fulfilled all 12 fixtures across the weekend.

First Team
The first team sit four points clear at the top of the Premiership after an excellent first weekend, bolstered by the availability of Dinuka Karunaratne and Freya Patel-Redfearn.
The entire team performed brilliantly and we beat Sussex 1sts 11-0, Hampshire 1sts 6-5 and Leicestershire 1sts 8-3.

Second Team
The second team are in the incredibly difficult Championship alongside county heavyweights such as Yorkshire 1sts, Warwickshire 1sts, Nottinghamshire 1sts, Essex 1sts and Lancashire 1sts.
The team sits in a relegation position currently having lost to Essex 1sts 0-11, beating Hertfordshire 2nds 7-4 and losing to Yorkshire 1sts 1-10.
Although it will be tough to stay in the division the team performed admirably and the win against Herts 2nds gives us an outside chance of survival.

Third & Fourth Team
The third and fourth teams are both in Division 2 South East.
The first match was the 3v4 match and the thirds helped to show that the selection committee knows what it?s doing by beating the 4s 10-1.
The 3rds then followed this up with a 7-4 win over Hertfordshire 3rds to sit four points clear at the top of the league.
The 4ths lost their afternoon match 5-6 to Bedfordshire 1sts and sit 7th of 8.
The thirds are in a great position to seek promotion to Division 1 South and the 4ths are in a real fight to stay in Division 2.

Fifth Team
The fifth team are in Division 3 South East (they were promoted from Division 4 following other county withdrawals).
The fifths are up against all second and third teams from other counties so were always going to find it tough, losing 4-7 to Kent 3rds and 2-9 to Essex 3rds.
They sit 6th of 8 and have a great chance of staying in this division.

Senior County Championships (Added 9 January 2022) - Expired (30 January 2022)

Senior County Championships back
after two year hiatus

When the county first team were 12 points in the lead going into the final weekend in March 2020, it looked inevitable that Middlesex would win a third consecutive County title. Covid-19 put paid to that and the season was cancelled but after two years of no county competition, the SCC is about to restart.

Middlesex has five teams raring to go and with more than 50 players selected, the county is proud to support the Senior County Championships on its return.
The first team seek to retain the title in the Premiership playing in Milton Keynes, the second team is in the Championship competing in Hatfield, both the thirds and fourths are in Division 2 South East and the fifth team is in division 3 South East.

Best of luck to all the players, managers and supporters.

I am delighted by the news that Geoff Rofe and Rajiv Ouseph have both been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to badminton, in the Queens New Year?s Honours which were recently announced Raj has been one of our most decorated players of the modern era, an incredible ambassador for the sport and a captain of the England Team who has led by example. Our volunteers are the heartbeat of the sport and none more so than Geoff. He has held so many offices in our sport, for Kent Badminton and for Badminton England for more than half a century. These awards recognise the respective, outstanding contributions both have made to badminton over many years and I am so delighted for them both. This is a hugely proud moment for Geoff, Raj and their families and their honours are richly deserved. Kind regards Adrian Christy

Coaches - Qualifications & Insurance (Added 2 September 2019) - Expired (30 November 2019)
We are writing to all the registered clubs in Middlesex to inform them about our concerns regarding the use of coaches and coaching sessions that they may run/organise. We need to remind clubs and players that if they are paying for the services of a person(s) to coach them, then that person must be a registered coach with Badminton England and a level 2 or above. Level 1 coaches are assistant coaches and are not QUALIFIED or INSURED to coach without the supervision of a higher qualified and registered coach. More information about what the different coaching levels can coach, can be found on Badminton England web site under coaches. All coaches, of whatever level, must have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to ensure that they are legally permitted to coach children and vulnerable adults. A coach of any level requires a current DBS check to register, regardless of whom they intend to coach. We would strongly recommend that clubs check with their 'coaches' to confirm the above details. If in doubt please contact either Middlesex County Badminton Association or the coaching department at Badminton England. FROM: John Herdman, County Chairman. & Sheila Collins, Middlesex Coaching & Development Officer.
